I was in a tough, tough situation. I was in a fight with some guys behind the school. Over the most ridiculous thing- that I didn't even do! Just to be a complete asshole, some kid turned the light off while someone else was taking a shit. Literally, taking a shit. And the kid taking a shit got mad at me, because the kid who actually did turn off the lights projected the problem onto me. I try to walk away and go on with my day, going outside during lunch. Then him, and his idiotic friends, gained up on me. I was pretty much helpless, just getting my ass kicked. I was bloodied up really bad, and I was barely able to get up. It was time to get back to class, but I just laid there, helplessly. Thank God there's a neighborhood right by my school, because some guy walking by helped me get back up.
"You okay bud?"
I looked at him, still kinda out of it. "It was awful... I just got pounded against by some students. Which is why I'm so bloody..."
"Did you fight back?"
"What's the point? I can't go up against that multiple people! Don't you see how small and weak I am?"
"One person, two people, five people. Makes no difference to me, since they have no backbone! That's why they're picking on you!"
I got back into full conscientiousness. I looked straight at him, immediately recognizing his face from martial arts. "I see. Easy for you to say, Ken Masters."
"Listen... I haven't always been the strongest man in the world. I was a normal kid, like you. But you know what? That didn't make a difference. I believed in my abilities, and that's why I am who I am today!"
I looked at him in awe. I already was familiar with what kind of badass he was, and that's why I idolize him the way I do.
"Well... I'm gonna be late for class. I better get going." I walked back into class.
He grabbed my shoulder, so I turned around. He put a card in my hand.
"Meet me at this address after school. I'll be waiting for you. Be there or be square!"
I nodded. I rushed back into class, just soon enough to not be tardy.
After school, I went to that exact address. Naturally, I was expecting a huge gym populated by many students and instructors teaching the Anastsuken style of martial arts. But what was it in reality? Ken's actual house, and I inspected the paper to make sure I was at the right place. Sure enough, I was, and he said "meet me in the basement". So I went down to the basement, which looked sort of like a gym, but it was really deep down, and I think it was fireproof. Makes sense, since his punches can cause stuff to get on fire. I saw him standing right in the middle of it. He gave me the thumbs up.
"I had a feeling you'd show up. You seem like a man of your word."
"Yeah. So let me guess, you're gonna start training with some discipline bullcrap?"
"Of course not. I'm not gonna waste your time. You're too much like me, you want to cut to the chase!"
"Your first test is to try to rock me with punches. Show no mercy!"
I started trying to punch him, and all he did was laugh. "I feel nothing."
I tried harder.
"I main as well just fall asleep now!"
I got into a rage and clipped him. He fell down, but I held him up.
"That was... awesome." He got back up. "I knew you had it in you." "Now you just need to work out! Use that bench press."
I used the bench press. Every day consisted of technique training, and working out. I can't go into specific detail since he'd kill me if I spilled his secrets to the public. But after a few years of doing this every day, I got stronger, and I could successfully pull off a flaming shoryuken.
We often had insightful conversations, since he wasn't nearly as stupid as he makes himself seem with his ego.
One day I asked, "Why did you take me in? Did you see something in me you don't see in most other people?"
He smiled, thought a bit, and answered. "I could spot potential in you immediately. You have a snappy kind of attitude, and you don't just try to run away, you try to do something, even if it means getting beat up! What I mean is, I see myself in you. Sure, I like my other students, like Sean Matsuda, but you have all the qualities that make me... me. The all-star fighter that I am! I even see that ego that I have!"
I smiled, and cried a bit of happy tears. "Thanks for all you've done for me. You turned me from a sub-par fighter into a real martial artist! I can't thank you enough!"
"Don't mention it. It's the least I could do for you. You're the only student I've had that hasn't annoyed me too much. Just promise you'll never give it up, you'll always try to improve yourself."
"I won't. I won't be like Ryu to where it's all I do, but I'll always think about it, and I will always find ways to make it even better!"
"That's what I like to hear!"
I hugged him, but then I pulled away. "Whoops..."
"It's ok, everyone needs a hug once in a while!"
I hugged him again, not pulling away so fast. "You're the best, man."
"I'm great, but one day, you'll be the best."
"I'll try to... I'll try my best to be that!"
"That's all I need to know. Now go home, class is dismissed."
I smiled a huge smile, and walked home. I was completely satisfied with myself, and I looked forward to the bright future ahead of me. Will I surpass my mentor, Ken Masters? Only time will tell.
